This is by far my greatest achievement as an engineer - it was one of my favourite projects to date. The boys from DIG came and tracked this cracker of an EP over a long weekend and then Ben came back over the rest of the week to layer up all that psychedelic goodness with Mellotrons and other weird synth type things that I don't understand.
My main goal in recording & producing this EP was to capture the live sound of the band, I wanted it to sound like a party, a loose house party where everyone is on another planet but having the time of their lives, I feel like we nailed it between all of us and I still listen to this album all the time now.
Steve loved double tracking the vocals via a megaphone for Deep in the Down Space, Ben loved splitting his signal via 2 amps both with tremolo (one fast one slow) for that mental chopping sound in Echo, it actually hurt to be in the room, kind of like when the back window's down on your car on the highway. Blgh.
Oh yeah, here's a fun fact, Josh tracked the bass to Deep in the Down Space IN ONE FREAKIN TAKE - listen to this song and you'll understand why that's worthy of an Obama 'Not Bad'.
This EP goes off. DIG were amazing, it was a priveledge to get to do this.
